Every year, without fail, we at Sky's the Limit Car Care get the same questions about ceramic coatings.
“How long will it really last?”

The problem is that in our industry, “lifetime” has become a word that sells comfort more than it sells truth. I'd like to take a moment to speak plainly about what ceramic coatings are, what they are not, and why our approach to them in the CQUARTZ Finest program differs significantly from what you typically see advertised.

What the Warranty Actually Says

The CQUARTZ warranty is intentionally simple.

It covers the coating itself against excessive loss of gloss, chipping, peeling, or fading over its stated life. That is it. It does not promise perpetual water beading. It does not claim the surface will look flawless forever. It does not guarantee that the environment will somehow stop affecting your vehicle.

And it does not warranty the clear coat.

That part sometimes surprises people, but it shouldn’t. Ceramic coatings do not cause clear coat failure. It is the result of manufacturing defects, UV exposure, time, climate, and years of environmental stress. By the time a coating is applied, the long-term fate of the clear coat was already written by factors far beyond the installer or the product.

The coating protects. It does not reverse time.

Why “Top Coats” Exist (And What No One Admits)

Other brands require annual “top coat” applications to maintain their warranty. On paper, it sounds like maintenance. In practice, it becomes something else entirely.

If you reapply something every year, the coating can never technically fail.

Whether that top layer is another coat of the same ceramic or a spray sealant, the effect is the same: the warranty clock never gets a chance to run out. It is a clever system, but it is not an honest one.

We do not mandate annual reapplications. We do recommend products like Reload or Elixir when it makes sense, when someone wants to boost slickness, revive hydrophobic behavior, or simply enjoys maintaining their car. But we do not use those products as loopholes to avoid responsibility.

Maintenance should serve the car, not the warranty department.

Environment Always Wins Eventually

No coating, from any brand, will remain perfect in a harsh environment without proper care.

A garaged car that is rarely driven will look incredible for many years. A daily-driven vehicle, parked outside, exposed to sun, rain, minerals, road salt, and industrial fallout, lives in a completely different reality.

Heat opens the pores of coatings. Minerals etch. Salt and sand act like microscopic sandblasters. Water spots bake into the surface. None of this is brand-specific. It is physics and chemistry.

On my own Tesla Model Y, the panels behind the front wheels take constant abuse from sand and debris. Those areas lose slickness faster. Not because the coating failed, but because the environment is relentless. In those cases, topping with Reload or Elixir is reasonable. It is not denial of reality; it is working with it.

How Real Claims Are Actually Evaluated

When a client returns with concerns, our installers don’t start with paperwork. They start with inspection.

They look at how the water behaves.
They feel the paint for contamination.
They assess whether the surface has been exposed to automatic washes, improper washing, or environmental buildup.

Then they attempt to restore the surface:
IronX for embedded ferrous contamination.
Spotless or Descale for mineral deposits.
Decontamination before condemnation.

More often than not, the coating is still there, doing its job. It is simply being masked by what has accumulated on top of it.

Maintenance: The Ideal and the Real

In a perfect world, every coated vehicle would be washed every two weeks with Reset, decontaminated periodically with IronX, and topped as needed.

In the real world, life happens.

This is why I say that four to five years of strong performance on a daily driver, when reasonably maintained, is a realistic and honest expectation. The surface will not remain flawless, but it will remain easier to clean, glossier, and better protected than uncoated paint.

If I’m being completely candid, most ceramic coating warranties are nearly worthless.

Not because the products are bad, but because fine print and rigid procedures rarely help real people in real situations. What actually has value is the relationship between the client, the installer, and the company standing behind both.

What Is pH and Why Should You Care?

pH is a scale that tells you how acidic or alkaline (basic) a substance is from 0 (acidic) to 14 (alkaline), with 7 being neutral (like water).

So why does this matter for detailing?

Because pH plays a major role in how a cleaner behaves. It can define how aggressive it is, what kinds of grime it breaks down best, and whether it's safe for certain materials, such as upholstery or coated paintwork. The last thing you want to do is torch a customer's car because their delicate finish couldn't handle the power of your preferred APC dilution ratio. 

Why Are Most APCs Alkaline?

Let’s start with the most common question regarding APC:

“Why do all-purpose cleaners usually have a high pH?”

Great question. Most APCs fall in the alkaline range. That’s by design. Alkaline cleaners are powerhouses when it comes to breaking down:

• Grease and oil

• Bug splatter

• Road film

• Protein-based contaminants (like bird droppings and sweat)

These are all organic materials, and alkaline solutions are especially good at lifting and dissolving them. This is why APCs are normally Alkaline. 

Let’s Talk Numbers: Real pH Ranges of Popular APCs

Here’s a quick snapshot of the pH ranges for some of the most popular APCs we carry:

The higher the pH, the more powerful the punch. But the more careful you have to be. Now there is also an element of dilution ratio. The more water in the mixture, the more diluted the concentration is, bringing down the potency, or the level of aklaidity. Becasue of this, thats why we always recomend sticking to the ratios we have listed in our product descriptions. 

What Does High (Alkaline) pH Do Exactly? 

Let’s break it down further and understand the science behind it:

Enhances Surfactants

Alkaline conditions boost surfactant performance. That means:

• More effective foaming

• Better micelle formation (the tiny bubbles that trap and lift dirt)

This makes alkaline APCs more efficient, especially on grimy jobs. The last thing you want to do is start smearing or working the product further into the surface. The foam and the micelle formation help "Lift" contaminants from the surface, making them more easily extracted or removed. usually in a safer manner when speaking about clearcoat. 

Versatile by Dilution

Another benefit?

You can customize the power.

• Light dilution (1:15–1:30): great for dashboards, door panels, light interior cleaning

• Medium dilution (1:5–1:10): perfect for tires, plastics, and lightly dirty engine bays

• Strong dilution or undiluted: use for wheel wells, undercarriages, and heavy grease

CAUTION: Can High-pH Cleaners Strip Wax or Sealant?

Yes. Especially when:

• The pH is above 10–11

• You're using it undiluted or nearly so. That means this product is insanely potent and extremely strong. 

• The protection is already worn down

If you're prepping for a coating or correction then great! But if you're just doing maintenance, this could work against you and require you to reapply protection. 

Are High-pH APCs Safe on Fabric?

Here’s where you need to pay attention.

“Can I use my strong APC on seats or carpets?”

You can, but it comes with risks:

• Dye bleeding or fading: Effectively removing the pigment of the fabric or leather. Unless thats your intention, that's more harm than good.

• Stiffness or fiber damage

• Residue buildup (unless thoroughly rinsed or extracted)

If you're dealing with delicate upholstery, we always recommend using something designed for the job. A GREAT example here is for Alcantera fabric. While some may still want to use APC for the job, we highly recommend using the microsuede cleaner from Dr. Beasley's, as we know it's safe and made exactly for the job.

What Materials Need Extra Caution?

Some surfaces just don’t mix well with strong alkalinity.

Avoid high-pH APCs on:

• Leather (especially aniline or vintage)

• Alcantara / Microsuede

• Dyed natural fibers

• Luxury interiors or vintage vehicles

Use a dedicated leather or interior cleaner instead. Your customer (or your own car) will thank you. 

Does Dilution Change pH?

Absolutely, but not dramatically. 

Take MultiX for example:

• At full strength: pH ~12.6

• At 1:10: pH drops closer to 10–11

• At 1:20+: It drops a bit more, but stays alkaline

So yes, dilution brings down the bite, but even diluted, these cleaners still pack cleaning power.

When choosing an APC, ask yourself:

• What surface am I cleaning?

• What level of grime am I dealing with?

• Do I need to preserve wax or coatings?

• Is the material sensitive to strong cleaners?

Start mild, and dial it up only as needed. When in doubt, test in an inconspicuous area first, and let the product work, rather than scrubbing aggressively.

What is CARPRO Lift?

CARPRO Lift is a snow foam product. It’s an alkaline foam that connects itself to your vehicle that loosens dirt, debris, and anything on the surface to make it easier to rinse off before yoru contact wash.

Two Key Uses for CARPRO Lift

1. Prewash Treatment:
   • You basically foam the product on a car that has not been washed for a while, or that has a lot of physical buildup, let it sit, and then rinse it off. The purpose here is to loosen and lift the hard and bonded dirt and get that out of the way before you do your final wash.
2. Wax Stripping/ Vehicle Prep:
   • If you goal is to remove old wax or to strip off an older aged sealant then lift is a great tool for that.

Is CARPRO Lift Right for Your Wash Method?

When considering whether CARPRO Lift is right for you, think about your current car washing setup. Are you someone who prefers the traditional bucket wash, or are you looking for something more streamlined?

For me, I’m a bucket guy. I like to work directly out of my bucket and not add additional equipment. But if I was in a production environment and I had two guys—one guy rinsing and one guy foaming and hitting—then you know, that’s a whole different thing.

How to Use CARPRO Lift

If you decide CARPRO Lift is right for you, here’s how to use it:

Equipment Needed

• Foam Cannon: The proper way to use Lift is to rinse the vehicle first and then apply it with a foam cannon, which is something you attach to a pressure washer.
• Foam Gun: There’s also something called a foam gun. A foam gun is similar, but you would attach that to a hose. With a foam gun, you’re not going to get nearly the amount of pressure or as dense of foam as you will with a foam cannon.

Application Process

1. Rinse the Vehicle:
   • Rinse with water until all areas of the vehicle have been sprayed.
2. Prepare the Foam:
   • Depending on what you’re trying to do and how strong you want to make it, you can go anywhere from using straight Lift to a combination of 1:1 or 1:10.
3. Foam the Vehicle:
   • We’re going to attach this directly to the pressure washer and foam it on there, let it sit no more than a minute, and then rinse it back off.
4. Final Wash:
   • After that, what we would generally do in most cases is come back with a wash mitt and wash it with CARPRO Reset to do the final wash.

Tips for Best Results

• Avoiding Water Spots:
  • It’s always important not to let water like this sit on the vehicle, especially in a warm environment. If you a water softener or a CR Spotless machine, then you have a little bit more leeway. But if there’s any minerals in that water, then you can get water spots very easily.
• Keep the Vehicle Wet:
  • Once you start your wash process, you want to keep the vehicle wet until you’re done, until you dry it.
